MANILA, Philippines–On the verge of a meltdown, San Miguel on Friday night hit all the important shots in the crunch to will the Beermen past Barangay Ginebra in overtime, 131-125, and level the PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals to a game apiece. ADVERTISEMENT

Terrence Romeo was on the forefront of that resolute stand at Smart Araneta Coliseum, helping weather one Gin Kings fight back after another with his conference-best 26 points.

“Game 1, we weren’t in the flow of the offense that’s why our defense was really bad. We were scrambling a lot. Now we knew where the ball should be going. June Mar (Fajardo) did a great job passing the ball to our shooters,” said head coach Jorge Gallent, whose charges led by 13 at one point in the contest.

MANILA, Philippines–Calvin Oftana showed the importance of locals playing well on Friday in Game 2 of the PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals at Araneta Coliseum.

The Tropang Giga relied more on Oftana, for a change, to notch the 108-91 victory and the pivotal 2-0 advantage.

“It’s what we need. And that’s really how it should be. We can’t put it all on our import,” said Oftana in Filipino.

MANILA, Philippines—Rain or Shine is staring at a 0-2 rut in the semifinals of the PBA Governors’ Cup, and Andrei Caracut can tell what his team is doing wrong.

From outside shooting to turnovers, the Elasto Painters are struggling in both figuring out TNT puzzle and getting something going after two games.

“I think it’s our turnovers. That’s really become our sickness. They also convert those [turnovers] into fast break points so that’s where they create their distance,” said Caracut after their 108-91 loss to Tropang Giga in Game 2.

MANILA, Philippines–TNT used a fiery third quarter on Friday night to take down Rain or Shine, 108-91, and seize a 2-0 lead in the PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals.

Calvin Oftana and Rey Nambatac combined for 24 points in that pull-away, which pretty much took the fight out of the Elasto Painters at Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

“Being up 2-0? It’s nice. But it takes four to get to the next stage,” said TNT coach Chot Reyes.

TNT coach Chot Reyes considers the semifinal series between Rain or Shine as a “battle of contrasts,” with the team that maximizes its strengths likely emerging as the victor down the road.

“Rain or Shine is like No. 1 or No. 2 in almost all offensive categories, and we’re No. 1 in most defensive categories,” Reyes said as the Tropang Giga go for a 2-0 lead in Friday’s Game 2 of their best-of-seven semifinals with the ElastoPainters at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Tropang Giga took the opener, 90-81, two nights ago inside Philsports Arena in Pasig City where they needed a four-pointer from import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson to shake off the E-Painters and held them to their second-lowest scoring output this conference.

MANILA, Philippines — Barangay Ginebra may have been benefitting from Justin Brownlee’s stellar four-point touch, but coach Tim Cone is still not a fan of the recently introduced 27-foot line in the PBA.

Brownlee had a near-perfect 5-of-6 four-point shooting to pour in 33 points in Ginebra’s dominant 122-105 win over San Miguel in Game 1 of the semifinals on Wednesday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

“Just because it favors our team with Justin, that doesn’t mean I’m [now] a fan of the four-point shot,” Cone said. “I just believe that the game has evolved into shooting—taking quick shots, taking four-pointers. If you watch practices … all they do is shoot threes and shoot fours, and I think the game is a lot more than that,” said Cone after their semis series opener win.

MANILA, Philippines—For the first time in the PBA Governors’ Cup, TNT import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had a taste of competition against Rain or Shine import Aaron Fuller.

With the group phase format in effect for the import-laden conference, RHJ and Fuller were unable to face off during the double-round robin elimination round.

Until Wednesday.

“I think whenever you find a post presence who has a motor, it’s definitely going to be challenging,” said Hollis-Jefferson at Philsports Arena.
